- E. bourgatii is an herbaceous perennial to 45cm tall, with deeply lobed and silver-veined leaves, and vivid blue, branched stems bearing cone-like flower-heads with narrow, spiny, usually silvery-blue or violet bracts.
- Foliage: Deciduous. Habit: Bushy.
- Position: Full sun. Aspect: South-, west-, or east-facing.
- Soil: Chalk, loam, or sand. Moisture: Well-drained. pH: Acid, alkaline, or neutral.
- Ultimate height: 0.1-0.5m. Time to ultimate height: 2-5 years. Ultimate spread: 0.1-0.5m.
- Protection from winter wet is essential. Propagate by root cuttings in late winter. Although you can cut back flower stems after flowering the seedheads are a very attractive feature so are usually left over winter. Suggested planting locations: Rock gardens, city and courtyard gardens, coastal, cottages and informal gardens, gravel gardens, or flower borders and beds.
