  • A deciduous climber, to 2m tall, with green leaves and flowering in mid to late summer. The purple to lilac-pink flowers are 5-8cm in diameter with a red-purple central bar contrasting with the creamy-yellow stamens.
  • Foliage: Deciduous. Habit: Climbing.
  • Position: Full sun or partial shade. Aspect: East-, south-, or west-facing.
  • Soil: Chalk, clay, loam, or sand. Moisture: Moist but well-drained. pH: Alkaline or neutral.
  • Ultimate height: 1.5m-2.5m. Time to ultimate height: 2-5 years. Ultimate spread: 0.5-1m.
  • Plant in a moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles at the base. Plant with the crown 5-8cm deep to encourage new shoots to grow from below ground level. Propagate by layering or semi-hardwood cuttings. May suffer from clematis diseases such as clematis slime flux and clematis wilt or powdery mildews. Suggested planting locations: city and courtyard gardens, patio and container plants, cottages and informal gardens, and wall side borders.
