How to Plant a Tree

Grow with us – How to Plant a Tree

Planting a tree is a rewarding process that contributes to the environment and enhances the beauty of your space. Whether your garden is large or small you are sure to benefit from planting trees in your valuable outside space.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you plant a tree successfully…

When to Plant?

Planting in autumn, whilst the soil is still warm and there are plentiful rains, offers a tree just the right amount of time to establish a root system before the ground freezes.

When it comes to planting trees, pick a time when air temperatures have cooled so that newly planted trees can focus on establishing root systems.

Look out the window before planting. If your neighbourhood trees still have their leaves – you’re good to go!

Step 1: Choose the Right Tree for Your Location

  • Climate and soil: Choose a tree species suited to your local climate and soil type. Consider the tree’s water, sunlight, and space requirements.
  • Purpose: Whether you want shade, flower, fruit, foliage, screening, or ornamental value, pick a tree that fulfills your needs. For more inspiration on this, see page 18/19 of our Autumn Cuttings 2024 magazine.

Step 2: Select the Right Location

  • Ensure the location has enough space for the tree to grow to its full height and width.
  • Consider the tree’s proximity to buildings, power lines, and underground utilities.
  • Make sure it gets the required amount of sunlight (full sun, partial shade, or shade).

Step 3: Prepare the Planting Site

  1. Dig a hole:
    • The hole should be 2-3 times wider than the tree’s root ball but only as deep as the root ball itself. This gives roots room to spread without sinking the tree too deep.
  2. Loosen the soil:
    • Loosen the soil around the hole to help the roots penetrate easily.

Step 4: Prepare the Tree for Planting

  • Remove the tree from its container: If it’s a container-grown tree, gently remove it and inspect the roots. If the roots are circling, tease them out to prevent girdling (roots that choke the tree).
  • For a balled and burlapped tree: Cut away any burlap, wire, or string from the root ball.

Step 5: Plant the Tree

  1. Place the tree in the hole:
    • The top of the root ball should be level with or slightly above ground level. Ensure the tree is straight.
  2. Fill the hole:
    • Backfill the hole with the original soil, breaking up clumps. Don’t pack the soil too tightly; leave it loose to allow for root growth.
  3. Water:
    • Once the hole is filled, water deeply to help settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Continue watering regularly, especially during the first few months.

Step 6: Mulch the Tree

  • Spread a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (like wood chips or compost) around the base of the tree. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Step 7: Stake the Tree (if necessary)

  • If the tree is in a windy area or the roots need extra support, stake it loosely. Remove the stakes after a year to allow natural root growth.

Step 8: Water and Care for the Tree

  • Watering: Regular, deep watering is crucial for the first 1-2 years as the tree establishes itself. Water weekly if there is no rain, ensuring the soil remains moist but not soggy.
  • Pruning: After planting, prune only dead or broken branches. Save shaping or heavy pruning for later.

Step 9: Monitor the Tree

  • Watch for pests, diseases, and other stress signs (such as wilting or discoloured leaves). Adjust watering or care as needed.

Planting a tree is just the first step—nurturing it in the years that follow is equally important! And enjoy the beauty of what you have planted and nurtured!
